The secret to building wealth is there are no secrets. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just a marketer trying to get into your wallet.

To prove this point I have added a 250 year old article on wealth building – Benjamin Franklin’s “The Way To Wealth” – to the Top 50 Articles section of this site. It is timeless wisdom proving little has changed on the subject of building wealth in the last 250 years.

I am particularly fond of this article because it showcases Benjamin Franklin’s rare genius in fields as diverse as business, finance, writing, politics and philosophy. He was a true Renaissance Man with an amazing gift. This article remains a classic in its field and highlights some of the best Ben Franklin quotations that have stood the test of time – many of which are personal favorites of mine.

What you will find in The Way To Wealth, written in 1757, is a summary of Franklin’s advice as published in Poor Richard’s Almanac from 1733-1758. It compiles his many proverbs into a systematic and ethical code teaching the value of frugality and industry resulting in a virtuous path to wealth.

That last point is very important because Franklin was rare in discussing the virtues of wealth building. I have always taught that building wealth is a path of growth and transformation as depicted by the tag-line on my site – Transform Yourself, Transform Your Wealth – but not many other writers share this view. In a world where people connect the words “filthy” and “rich” together it is refreshing to read about a virtuous path to wealth from another author.
