7 Steps To Setting Goals And Actually Achieving Them

Ho-hum. Another boring blog post about goal setting.

Been there, done that. Time to hit the delete button.

Everyone knows they’re supposed to set goals, but hey, you’re also supposed to exercise daily, eat less sugar, and drive within the speed limit, but we all know how that goes.

Why should goal setting get any special treatment? Usually it doesn’t.

The truth is life is filled with more “shoulds” than there is time or interest to complete. If you did everything you’re supposed to do then you would never get anything done worth doing.

Goal setting is one of those things that’s easy to put on the back burner because the world won’t come to end when you skip it. After all, you didn’t set goals last year and you’re still breathing today so what’s the big deal?

Well, it all depends on what you want…

How Goal Setting Works

I have a simple time management system: I do the important stuff first that will make the biggest difference in my life and let everything else fight for the crumbs of time left behind. That’s the only way to get anything done that matters; otherwise, my life would be filled with endless, cluttered insanity.

For example, this website languished with little progress for years until I sold enough businesses and eliminated enough distractions from my life to where I could work on it first thing each day. It is the only reason it is now getting built. It is the result of goal setting.

Goal setting is important enough to make it to the front of my priority line each year. In fact, it is so important I rework my goals throughout the year and published a lengthy article in the Top 50 Articles section explaining my annual goal setting process that helped me build wealth.

I give it to you for free so that you can do the same.

Here are some highlights of what the article will teach so that you can decide if reading it and following through on the instructions is worth your time…

  • A Harvard study concluded the 3% who actually commit their goals in writing earned an astounding 10 times the group with no clearly defined goals. Which group are you in?
  • Goal setting is an investment in your future that costs nothing and you risk nothing to try. Some people use the excuse they don’t have the time, but goal setting actually saves time by reducing wasted effort. What excuse are you using to justify not setting goals?
  • Goal setting gives you a competitive advantage by engaging your mind in a specific way. This article explains the 5 ways that occurs producing a competitive advantage that can make the difference between retiring early and wealthy or living a lifetime of financial mediocrity.
  • Goal setting is most effective when it’s a habit. This article provides a 7 step process to set your goals at least annually, and review them at least monthly. When you follow this 7 step process you build a regular cycle so that goal setting becomes an integral part of your life. If you set goals in a random or irregular fashion then you will get random and irregular results. If you set and review your goals regularly you will move them to the forefront of your mental awareness which will create consistent results.
  • Goal setting helped me build wealth and it can do the same for you so why wouldn’t you do it?

Why Nobody Wants To Hear About Goal Setting

Nobody wants to hear about goal setting for two reasons…

  1. You’ve heard it all so many times before that you think you already know about it.
  2. Nobody likes being reminded of things you should do because then you feel guilty for not getting it done.

Sorry, but my job as a coach isn’t to make you feel good: my job is to help you get results. That is why I get on my soap-box every year and talk about goal setting even though I know nobody wants to read about it. It gets results.

So go ahead and click away or delete. Rationalize and ignore this message. It’s your life.

Just remember, to know and not do is to not know at all. Either you follow through and do the work or you don’t really know it after all.

If it is important enough for me to do it, and it is effective enough to make an integral part of my financial coaching practice, then it is probably worth an evening of your time to follow through and make it happen.

…Even if it is a boring subject.

You can learn step-by-step exactly how I set goals for absolutely zero cost, and the book listed to the left is another affordable resource on the subject so check it out.

Okay, I’m done standing on my soapbox. I’ll step down now so you can tell me you thoughts in the comment section below…

Hi Todd,

Happy New Year!

In your referenced article you nailed it for me - the whole concept of Front of Mind. There is so much distraction, that you have to keep what you want in front of you or else it gets lost in the noise of life. I use a program called YBYY - Your Best Year Yet by Jenny Ditzler. It's online but a while ago it was a book - anyway - I go through that every year starting in November, and then program it out into reminders using my calendar and weekly and monthly progress reports.

I also love the concept of reverse engineering the process. Really great stuff. I am looking forward to your news and release of your new product this Spring.

@ Darlene - Yes, reverse engineering your goal is key to taking daily actions and accountability. It is a critical principle.

Thanks for your feedback.
