I came across two great, free resources (hat tip to Mebane Faber) this week that I wanted to let you know about. One makes passive portfolio allocation easy and the other makes moving average back-testing easy.
The first is a super simple, free, online tool that allows you to change allocations in a passive buy and hold investment portfolio and see the historical results. You will find it here and it is so intuitive to use that anyone who needs instructions probably shouldn’t be using it anyway.
The second is the simplest moving average back-testing tool I have ever seen. Just a few clicks to choose the data sample and specify parameters and a complete set of results is produced.
On a personal note, I was impressed at how far this type of optimization analysis has come in such a short time. Playing with these tools took me back to my early days of investment research when I hand coded everything in BASIC and hand built databases inferior to these using a 10-key-by-touch pad. After weeks of work I could extract a fraction of the information these tools can produce in seconds.
Similarly, with the first tool you can now compile the type of portfolio optimizations that only large brokerage houses had access to until recently. And you don’t even have to pay the broker’s fees to use them.
Pretty amazing how the quality of free resources on the internet just keeps rising. The next decade should be amazing.
Please share your thoughts about these resources and any others you might find useful in the comments below…
